Our Story

- From Our Family To Yours -

It all started over a quiet family dinner in 1987. Danielle and I love all-natural foods and to stay true to our wants and needs…we naturally grew our own veggies, including garlic. We didn’t share much at first, but when that family dinner ended we were forced to turn over the “awesome” garlic we had grown. The next year we grew a little more garlic, so the family wouldn’t raid our kitchen.

Next came our close friends, so we grew more…and then their friends…so we grew more.  After a bit of research into the different types of garlic and what would grow in our beautiful, but cold little state, Witchcat Farm was born. We were surprised to learn many garlic varieties flourish in our cold climate.

We started with only one type of garlic and over the years we experimented with many different varieties to see what would grow well in Northern Vermont.  We now grow over 30 varieties, all of which are certified organic. We harvest over 12,000 pounds of garlic every year and distribute it throughout New England & New York. We also provide our local restaurants and eateries. And now, through our website, we offer direct-to-customer products so everyone everywhere can enjoy our “awesome” garlic. Special thanks to our family for wanting more garlic.

We have been certified since 1999 by VOF (Vermont Organic Farmers). For the last 20 years, we have been collecting different varieties. We are now up 32. We plant, mulch, weed, scrape, and harvest by hand and manage to bring in more than 12,000-15,000 lbs annually.

All of the garlic is grown on our farm in Bakersfield, VT. and we do not outsource any of our products. We bust our butts to be able to sell the best. We have a three-year rotation of our fields and each year they are planted with bee-friendly cover crops such as buckwheat, field peas, or vetch. All of which is mowed and tilled in to build the soil fertility. After 20 years, the organic content is “off the charts”.
